.
.. I criticise who writes well about how the "creative class" holds the key to economic development. This week he is in Sweden, so we will hear a lot of talk about his index which puts Sweden as the no 1 creative country in the world.
But we win because of a lot of university education, patents and research. Florida does not look at how we use those ideas, and how much goes into commercialised patents, new businesses and new jobs - he just looks at the input, not the creative output. If he did, he would see that Sweden would make the top of the list of countries that waste their potential.
Whereas other EU-15 countries have increased the number of entrepreneurs by 9 percent since 1995, Sweden´s number has been reduced by 9 percent. And Sweden is the only country except Finland with jobless growth the last decades.
So don´t throw away Florida´s ideas. Creativity really holds they key. But throw away that superficial index.
