Si un sistema abierto, bien conectado y escasamente limitado por reglas de comportamiento dispone de suficiente tiempo, las interacciones entre sus elementos generarán una inmensa diversidad de estructuras y dinámicas. En un mundo digital, los elementos básicos son piezas de código y los resultados de sus interacciones pueden traducirse en casi cualquier artefacto físico o virtual, sean sonidos, imágenes, juegos o el proceso evolutivo, por ejemplo. En todos los casos, la creatividad del sistema depende de su capacidad generativa, no es controlable ni predecible pero si “diseñable” configurando sus propiedades. A esta conclusión han llegado, entre otros, científicos, músicos, programadores o diseñadores de videojuegos, y debería proporcionar inspiración a todo aquel interesado en lograr sistemas u organizaciones (sean empresas, ciudades o comunidades de usuarios) innovadoras y creativas.
Stephen Wolfram, genio precoz, científico heterodoxo y creador de Mathematica, propuso en A new Kind of Science (físicamente un enorme libro; intelectualmente un proyecto científico aún más ambicioso) una teoría “que lo explique todo” basada en principios computacionales simples, no en ecuaciones matemáticas. Para ello utiliza como unidades computacionales básicas de su sistema los autómatas celulares con las que construye dinámicas sumamente complejas gracias a la intensidad y diversidad de interacciones que se generan en el sistema. De este modo, estructuras simples (los autómatas celulares) generan sistemas complejos que, según Wolfram, pueden explicar los más diversos fenómenos naturales. Es muy discutible, aunque extremadamente sugerente, la pretensión de Wolfram de explicarlo todo mediante sus teorías y herramientas, pero es indiscutible la capacidad creativa de sus algoritmos. 3quarksdaily hace un excelente resumen del trabajo de Wolfram y de su libro:

Wolfram’s work has its origin in cellular automata invented by the Hungarian physicist John von Neumann. Briefly, a complex system can be represented by using squares on graph paper that can be colored either black or white. Starting with one initial black square, a rule can be written which determines how its neighbors will be colored in each succeeding step forward. The properties of cellular automata are best explored using a computer which can generate thousands of iterations instantaneously. Wolfram found that with repeated iterations, complexity can arise out of simple rules.
Posiblemente los autómatas celulares han sido inventandos muchas veces y de formas muy diferentes. Además han inspirado creaciones en ámbitos de lo más diverso como, por ejemplo, la música, la “pintura” o los videojuegos. Will Wright (el padre de The Sims y todos sus juegos derivados, como SimCity) y Brian Eno (compositor, productor y, sobre todo, visionario de la cultura digital) debatieron recientemente en el Long Now Seminar acerca de la creación generativa. Tanto el trabajo de Wright como el de Eno podrían considerarse en realidad materializaciones de los modelos basados en autómatas celulares. Back in the 1970s both speakers got hooked by cellular automata such as Conway's "Game of Life," where just a few simple rules could unleash profoundly unpredictable and infinitely varied dynamic patterns. Cellular automata were the secret ingredient of Wright's genre-busting computer game "SimCity" in 1989. Eno was additionally inspired by Steve Reich's "It's Gonna Rain," in which two identical 1.8 second tape loops beat against each other out of phase for a riveting 20 minutes. That idea led to Eno's "Music for Airports" (1978), and the genre he named "ambient music" was born.
Wright observed that science is all about compressing reality to minimal rule sets, but generative creation goes the opposite direction. You look for a combination of the fewest rules that can generate a whole complex world which will always surprise you, yet within a framework that stays recognizable. "It's not engineering and design," he said, "so much as it is gardening. You plant seeds. Richard Dawkins says that a willow seed has only about 800K of data in it."
Eno noted that ambient music, unlike "narrative" music with a beginning, middle, and end, presents a steady state. "It's more like watching a river." Wright said he often uses Eno's music to work to because it gets him in a productive trancelike state. Eno remarked that it's important to keep reducing what the music attempts, and one way he does that is compose everything at double the speed it will be released. Slowing it down reduces its busyness. Wright: "How about an album of the fast versions?" Eno: "'Amphetamine Ambient.'"
"These generative forms depend very much on the user actively making connections," Eno said. "In my art installations I always have sound and light elements that are completely unsynchronized, and people always assume that they are tightly synchronized. The synchronization occurs in them. "

Entre otras cosas, Eno y Wright hablan sobre qué clase de propiedad intelectual es posible en los sistemas generativos, por qué jugar un juego y tocar un instrumento comparten el mismo verbo en ingles, las formas en que escuchar música y jugar a videojuegos son actividades que alteran tu percepción del tiempo, y en qué consiste hoy en día la cultura.
El último proyecto de Brian Eno, 77 Million Paintings, es un claro ejemplo de generatividad en el arte. Tal como explican en Elástico, es “un sistema de arte algorítmico que genera un flujo permanente de imágenes y sonidos y que tras haber girado por distintos paises como instalación / exposición, se publicará próximamente en forma de DVD-Rom interactivo.”. El proyecto ya ha sido expuesto en Japón tal como se comenta aquí y aquí (además, versión YouTube y las fotos de Mark Alberding). Además en The Independent acaban de publicar un artículo sobre la música y pintura generativas de Eno (Brian Eno: The life of Brian).
Pero, probablemente, el ejemplo a mayor escala de la capacidad generativa de las redes abiertas nos lo proporcione Internet. De esto trata precisamente el artículo The Generative Internet de Jonathan Zittrain (Oxford Internet Institute y Berkman Center for Internet Society en la Universidad de Harvard) que ha aparecido en Harvard Law Review (Vol. 119, p. 1974, May 2006; versión pdf; también disponible en SSRN). Zittrain propone que la arquitectura abierta de la red es la única forma de garantizar su capacidad creativa. La generatividad de la red depende tanto del uso de estándares abiertos en Internet como en los ordenadores. Los problemas de seguridad de los PCs, y los cambios que provoquen, pueden comprometer la generatividad futura de la red, o sea la capacidad innovadora de las redes de usuarios de Internet. Para resolver el conflicto entre creatividad y estabilidad, Zittrain porpone un modelo intermedio entre las redes cerradas y totalmente abiertas:
The generative capacity for unrelated and unaccredited audiences to build and distribute code and content through the Internet to its tens of millions of attached personal computers has ignited growth and innovation in information technology and has facilitated new creative endeavors. It has also given rise to regulatory and entrepreneurial backlashes. A further backlash among consumers is developing in response to security threats that exploit the openness of the Internet and of PCs to third-party contribution. A shift in consumer priorities from generativity to stability will compel a response from regulators and markets and, if unaddressed, could prove decisive in closing today's open computing environments. This Article explains why PC openness is as important as network openness, as well as why today's open network might give rise to unduly closed endpoints. It argues that the Internet is better conceptualized as a generative grid that includes both PCs and networks rather than as an open network indifferent to the configuration of its endpoints. Applying this framework, the Article explores ways - some of them bound to be unpopular among advocates of an open Internet represented by uncompromising end-to-end neutrality - in which the Internet can be made to satisfy genuine and pressing security concerns while retaining the most important generative aspects of today's networked technology.

JZ believes that the most interesting feature of the Internet we know and love is “generativity” - the ability for “unrelated and uncredited audiences to build and distribute code and content through the Internet to its tens of millions of attached personal computers”. Technologies are generative when they are:
- Leveragable (they allow you to accomplish tasks that couldn’t otherwise be accomplished)
- Adaptable (useful for multiple purposes)
- Easy to master
- Accessible to a broad audience.
Defined by these criteria, an interconnected network of multipurpose devices which can be repurposed by third-party code is one of the most generative inventions ever created.
Los DJs están abandonando platos, vinilos y samples, los músicos olvidan sus instrumentos en las actuaciones en directo. Existe una nueva forma de crear una experiencia musical y visual en directo: Livecoding (dos ejemplos en YouTube). Los livecoders utilizan ordenadores y lenguajes de programación (Perl y otros diseñados específicamente para ese comentido) para crear composiciones sobre la marcha.
