Location in art and technology: places and/or spaces [Paralelo: Unfolding Narratives in Art, Technology & Environment]

En Marzo de 2009 se celebró en Sao Paulo el workshop Paralelo (más información acerca del evento en su wiki; (live)streams of the panels) donde se exploraron los ámbitos artístico, tecnológico y ambiental y sus interrelaciones. Karla Brunet (del grupo Ecoarte de la Universidade Federal da Bahia, Salvador, Brasil) participó en el evento con un análisis del papel del lugar y el espacio en el arte y la tecnología. Karla y yo preparamos posteriormente un texto sobre este tema para la publicación resultado de un "call for papers" realizado por el equipo editorial a los participantes en el workshop. En este libro aparecen contribuciones de diversos autores sobre el evento y sobre otros temas y contextos relacionados con las relaciones entre arte, tecnología y medio ambiente. La edición es bilingüe en inglés y portugués. This paper proposes an initial discussion on location in art and technology. The subject came out on an Open Space Session at Paralelo. Technology & Environment: A meting point for artists, designers & researchers [1].

Despite the increasing interest, and hype, for locative works in art and the development of several location-based projects with new media, the significance of location is quite variable. Only in some cases artists and developers have reflected about the meaning and importance of location in their work.

The explicit inclusion of location in a process should mean that the space and/or place, the specific site where the project is developed (including its environmental, social and/or cultural characteristics), are of prime importance for the work. However, the selection of location is often more a matter of opportunity (related to festivals, availability of funding…) and it is not based in an in depth knowledge of the local space, and its associated culture and relevant problems and conflicts.

In other cases, projects are designed for a given cultural context (mainly European or North American, where the concentration of artists, festivals and funding is higher) and, after their success; they are transplanted to other cultural contexts (i.e., developing countries) sometimes without adaptation. But, conflicts or problems shift in relevance from place to place and artists might not have the adequate background (cultural, environmental, linguistic…) to work in the new places. These problems of translocation provoke that projects with a deep meaning and implications in the Western context loose their interest, in some cases, the aesthetical one, in other geographic and cultural spaces.

Accordingly, projects of artists working with location could generate expectative about its social impact, for instance, giving visibility to a conflict or empowering the local community. For this reason, here we will focus especially in media art that have a determined concern on its location.

1. Place/Space

In the present text, location-based projects are understood as centered on places, and not only on spaces. Place is a more complex concept than space and incorporates all the social, cultural and functional meanings, and working with places (not only spaces), artistic processes could embrace political and social aspects.

In this sense, we follow the proposals of some authors that have highlighted the difference from place to space. In 1977, the Chinese-American geographer Yi-fu Tuan, in his book “Space and place: the perspective of experience” proposes the notion of place and space as inter-related. Space could be understood as the bottom layer composed mostly of environmental and topographical features. Place is constructed by new social and cultural layers developed over space, and dependent to some extent of the characteristics of the space. For Tuan (2001: 66), the “space becomes place as we get to know it better and endow it with value.” The space is abstract and when it is experienced in many extents (personal, social, cultural and physical) turn out to be the place.

Steve Harrison and Paul Dourish (1996) continue to develop the idea of places as spaces expanded by human meanings and uses:

Physically, a place is a space which is invested with understandings of behavioural appropriateness, cultural expectations, and so forth. We are located in “space”, but we act in “place”. Furthermore, “places” are spaces that are valued. The distinction is rather like that between a “house” and a “home”; a house might keep out the wind and the rain, but a home is where we live.

However, the idea of space as a basic source for place should be extended to take into account that also space is modified by the human elements associated with the concept of place. In this way, a broader and contemporary notion of space could be obtained, as the Brazilian geographer Milton Santos (1988) proposed: “O espaço seria um conjunto de objetos e de relações que se realizam sobre estes objetos; não entre estes especificamente, mas para as quais eles servem de intermediários. Os objetos ajudam a concretizar uma série de relações. O espaço é o resultado da ação dos homens sobre o próprio espaço, intermediados pelos objetos naturais e artificiais.” [2] (Santos 1988: 25)

In 1996, Milton Santos (2006) wrote “A Natureza do Espaço” (The Nature of Space), where he presented the technology and the technical object as part of the construction of this space and its history. For the author (1995), technology is totally interrelated to the social and its interference on territory, space and place. “Nothing is purely social, but it is also equally technical. In short, everything is hybrid, is mixed.” (Santos 1995) This interrelation of technology and space is commonly seen on location-based artwork. Artists use technology to constructs new spaces or to understand the existing ones.

It is also important to highlight Henri Lefebvre’s notions of a social space and the production of spatial relations. In “The production of space”, Lefebvre (1991) proposes a triad to explain how space is produced:

1. Spatial practice, which embraces production and reproduction, and the particular locations and spatial sets characteristic of each social formation. Spatial practice ensures continuity and some degree of cohesion. In terms of social space, and of each member of a given society’s relationship to that space, this cohesion implies a guaranteed level of competence and a specific level of performance.
2. Representations of space, which are tied to the relations of production and to the ‘order’ which those relations impose, and hence to knowledge, to signs, to codes, and to ‘frontal’ relations.
3. Representational spaces, embodying complex symbolisms, sometimes coded, sometimes not, linked to the clandestine or underground side of social life, as also to art (which may come eventually to be defined less as a code of space than as a code of representational spaces). (Lefebvre 1991: 33)

Having Lefebvre’s view, art works with the symbolisms of the representation of space. However, artists developing location-based projects have to be aware and understand the spatial practices and representations of space to be able to produce symbolisms meaningful for a specific place.

Moving from the distinction of space and place (place constructed over space) to the networked space (interacting objects and relations) makes the awareness of place and space necessary. Actually, there would be not isolated spaces (without history and human intervention) differentiated from the components usually associated with places. Artists working with location should not forget they are dealing with a social space, a space juxtaposed by layers of culture, geography, social conditions, political opinion, technology, representations and symbolisms.

2. Location choices

An Open Space Session was held in Paralelo having some questions regarding location and art. How artists choose the location for their artwork? How location is employed on their projects? Is location important to their artwork? In which location they usually develop art? Is location the main theme of the artwork? Is there an interaction with the community in the location chosen? Which is the relevance of location (environmental conditions, social patterns, conflicts and culture particularities)?

In “Land and Environmental Art”, Jeffrey Kastner and Brian Wallis (2005) propose five ways that artists work with land and environment, that is what they call the 5 “i”:

• Integration is when the artwork uses nature to produce different landscapes, as creating sculptures with stones or leaving traces of human interference. An example of that is “Amarillo Ramp” by Robert Smithson
• Interruption is when the artwork uses external materials to produce inquietude and questioning. An example of this kind of artwork is the “Running Fence” by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
• Involvement is when the artist works in a direct relationship with the earth; usually they are performances of the artist juxtaposed to the environment. As, for example, the work by Ana Mendieta Birth that demonstrates the physical contact of her body with the earth.
• Implementation is when the artist explores the natures, its ecosystem and its relations to the human being. The artworks are generally sculptures, installations or performances. An example of it is “7000 Oaks” by Joseph Beuys.
• Imagining is when the artwork uses the environment as a metaphor, as symbols of society and its influence. An example for it is “The California Map Project” by John Baldessari.

This classification was thought to analyze the artwork by land and environmental artists, specially the ones done in the 70s and 80s. Nowadays, in studying location-based artwork and its extensive use of technology, we can borrow Kastner and Wallis “i” and apply their categorization to many of the projects. However, some projects wouldn’t fit in any of those proposed forms, it is necessary the creation of others “i”.

During the Paralelo event, Tapio Mäkelä, presented a work in which location is a starting point to the art project. In concept:islands [3] researchers and media artists get together on a residency program to come up with discussion, ideas, experimentations having the main theme the island and its environment. Here, this Baltic island is part of the cultural landscape of the artist, as also a summer vacation place for Scandinavians. In his statement, Mäkelä presented the concern of the ecological degradation of the islands surroundings and proposition of working with the place in a conscious way.

A more recent project by Tapio Mäkelä and other artists and researchers that it is also centered on location is Ecolocated [4], an installation on Catalyst Arts gallery presenting the monitoring of the sea around Belfast. Location is the main subject because the variability in the ecology of a coastal zone around Belfast is used to understand the dependencies between humans and the ecosystem, the environmental impacts we cause in this highly used space and, finally, the perception and feelings of the local population about its surrounding environment.

Actually, Ecolocated starts using methods close to the science of ecology, both regarding perception instruments and the approach (using spatial variations to understand connections among people and ecosystems) but expands science and art to understand the complexities, objective and subjective, of the relationships between people and places in the coastal space. The Ecolocated installation could fit in the category “imagining” proposed by Kastner and Wallis since the aesthetical experience of the artwork suggests a metaphor for the location.

Another Finish artist concerned with location is Timo Jokela. In his work, the artist (Coutts and Jokela 2008) strengths the notions of working in a place and getting to know it and feeling affection for it. His references are Yi-Fu Tuan’s (1990) topophilia concept, the love for a place, and Edward Relph’s (1976) studies on the relationship of a person and a place. For the artist, the previous experience in a given place before developing the artwork is very important; it is the time when he can feel the location, its landscape, community and culture.

The importance of the relationship with community and its landscape is also emphasized by Giles Lane from Proboscis [5]. Snout, a project by Proboscis, explores the “relationships between the body, community and the environment” (http://socialtapestries.net/snout/). In the project, characters with carnival costumes and wearing sensors for environmental monitoring, especially pollution, go around town collecting data which is presented in maps that question the environmental quality of the urban habitat and instigate the community to a participation. The carnival character performance on the streets is an example of the “Interruption” proposed by Kastner and Wallis while the final map could be “Imagining”.

The commitment with the community is seen in many of Proboscis’ work. Giles Lane commented [6] that in Urban Tapestries [7], when constructing the maps they have learned with the community what kind of technology was better suitable to them. The first version of the project used high technology that, at a given time, was not comfortable to the participants. Therefore, the solution was to go back in terms of means and simplify the tools, having the same sort of results but with simpler/easier devices.

3. Festivals and Art Location

It is known that art festivals are creating new forms of working with space. Festival organizers frequently have a great interest in the development of works involving the local places and people, looking for more social and cultural impact or to adapt to the interests of the politicians and institutions funding these events. Frequently, artists are invited to participate of a festival and the location is given to them, or imposed to them, it is not a chosen choice of a place to develop their artwork. In this sense, a key part of the artistic process, the location choice, is in charge of organizers and curators. This situation raises many questions on how this location is worked. Are festival locations suitable to artworks that were done in other places?

Festivals create de facto a new form of working with location: the imposed location. In the new locations proposed by festivals, artists many times don’t have a good knowledge of the culture, specially the language. And when working with the community of that location, problems of miscommunication, misunderstanding and misconception could arise. In order to soften this sort of problems, artists usually work in collaboration with local artists or producers.

In any case, the imposed location raises some challenges to artists that should make an additional effort to learn basic aspects of the place and adapt their approach and processes. When this challenge is ignored, location-based projects could become disconnected from place and probably could be irrelevant in respect to its potential social and political impact.

Esther Polak, after creating her MILKproject [8] in Europe, has developed a part of NomadicMILK [9] cow tracking in Mato Grosso, Brazil. MILKproject, the original European version of Polak practice, can be a canonical example of art involving location and technology and with a clear social and political impact. However, NomadicMILK, a new project directly related with the European work, is developed on a new context, where local culture, community conflicts and interests and “milk industry” are completely different. In this sense, expected results of social and political interest in Europe are not necessarily relevant. Also, a totally new location for the project implies cultural and language particularities that could restrict the ability to develop the artwork for artists of European origin without an understanding and learning of these peculiarities.

All the above problems are evident in the development of the Brazilian project due to its detachment because it was done in a “proposed” (“imposed”) location. It is not observed an involvement with the place and caring with the particularities of the communities and “milk industry” as seen in the European version and other projects of the artist.

However, when only physical space is relevant, translocations could be made without important adaptations. An example of this kind of projects developed in one location and later applied to other is Can you see me now [10]. This game, created by Blast Theory, was initially produced to be played in Europe (the first versions were in Sheffield and Rotterdam), and in 2008 a version was played in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). In the Brazilian version, at Arte.mov Festival [11], the players could include only a small part of the community, the ones that could fluently speak English since communication was mandatory during the play. In order to soften that problem, the game producers chose some runners that could be fluent on both languages (Portuguese and English) and would be able to communicate with the Blast Theory team and the Brazilian online players. Projects as Can you see me now does not require much involvement with the community, during the running the players hardly ever interact with the city citizens, so this transposition from one place to another is not so disturbing. They use the city as a physical space for their project, not as a place where they have some sort of commitment.

This concern with the location on art projects imposed by festivals doesn’t happen only with projects that migrate from one country to another. In places as Brazil, where there are large geographical extensions and cultural differences, a project created to a specific location could be very hard to work the same way on another. For example, the project Mapeando Lençóis [12], done during Submidialogia#3 in Lençóis, BA, would be very hard to be recreated in Belém, the city of Submidialogia#4, one of capitals of Amazon Forest. Even though the language would not be a problem, the cultural differences in the northern regions, their understating of place, mapping, and geographical space is very different from other regions of Brazil. A careful study of their cultural expression and traditions would be necessary before the developing of the mapping project there. Since this is an example of a project that demands a great involvement of the community, the appreciation and understanding of the local culture is essential.

The art project The Dark Forest [13] developed in conjunction by MobileFest (Brazil) and the English group Active Ingredient [14] explores the man’s intervention on forests. The project involves parallel work with school children in both countries (Brazil and England) in order to do a comparison of data visualizations and forest types between the Mata Atlântica forest in Brazil and the Sherwood in England. This part of the project shows its concerns with the preservation of the forests by working with the communities and getting them involved and influencing on their education and consciousness.

Another part of The Dark Forest is the The BR163 Expedition [15], an interactive documentary done with mobile technology in order to visualize the impact of the construction of BR 163, a federal road that will link the city of Cuiabá-MT, in the center region of Brazil, to Santarém-PA, in the northern region of the country, in Amazon forest. Documentation as such, working in conflict area, demands a lot of involvement of the artists in researching the situation, knowing its cultural background, geography, ecology, social condition, history… This type of road construction crossing the Amazon forest has historically generated many disagreements: from the construction of the BR-230 Transamazônica [16] road to the controversies exposed by the environmentalist and activist Chico Mendes during the construction of the part of BR-364 that links Porto Velho to Rio Branco [17]. In this kind of locations and communities, characterized by the many interests and historical facts involved, artists should be aware of their impact and political position. Many choices can rise up during the process of this kind of projects: Should artists interfere? Is the interference the role of the artists? How artists work with the community involved in the conflict? Is possible for the artist to keep apolitical during the process? Should the artists be political in this kind of situations?

4. Some Considerations

The questions posed before are crucial for artists creating projects based on location. The complete understanding of the location to be worked on, including its layers of culture, social conditions, education, religion… and their interactions, is important to the development of the project. Any artwork, especially those involved with location and places, includes an implicit or explicit political meaning. It is hard to say that a work is apolitical; in fact, trying to state that is already a form of being political. In this sense, discussions about the existence or not of a political intention or implications are worthless here. Instead, more attention should be paid to identify the political consequences of the projects and to incorporate the artists’ interests in the processes. However, when politics becomes a relevant part of the artwork, projects could incorporate a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach both in methods and objectives.

An example of methodology could be the experimental geography that is becoming, in the last years, a growing field where collaboration among disciplines, people with different backgrounds, and the mix of art, science, technology and activism is working critically to create new understandings of space and new tools to empower local communities. The starting interest of these projects is the practice and in an inductive way the experimentation with (and creation of) spaces allows to theorize about the meaning of location. Nato Thompson (2008), the curator of an art exhibition called Experimental Geography, considers these kind of work as poetic, didactic, geologic and urban, and being most of all, empirical. In words of Trevor Plagen, who has coined the term:

The task of experimental geography, then, is to seize the opportunities that present themselves in the spatial practices of culture. To move beyond critical reflection, critique alone, and political “attitudes,” into the realm of practice. To experience with creating new spaces, new ways of being. (Paglen 2008)

Maps are key elements mediating the analysis, interpretation and creation of space, especially the interaction between territories and people. A large part of the works of experimental geography involves some form of cartography. Tactical cartographies are a methodology or an orientation for working with location on conflict areas proposed by the Institute for Applied Autonomy (2008). As they explain:

Extending these notions to spatial representation, then, we claim that "tactical cartography" refers to the creation, distribution, and use of spatial data to intervene in systems of control affecting spatial meaning and practice. Simply put, tactical cartographies aren't just about politics and power; they are political machines that work on power relations. (Mogel and Bhagat 2008: 30)

Experimental geography makes clear that maps are personal and subjective representations of spaces promoting a change in perspective. Therefore, maps shift from an objective product of the “cartographic science” to an interface for representing personal or collective views of places. Taking into account this alternative meaning, maps and the mapping practices become key tools of artists working with location. Besides that, new mapping technologies lower the barriers to entry (both in terms of cost and expertise) and are opening new opportunities for collaborative work.

The basic working hypothesis of experimental geography relates directly to the ideas of space proposed by Milton Santos (1988) because people and territory interact, as also stated by Thompson (2008) and it is grounded in the work of Henri Lefebvre (1991) and Guy Débord (1955). This approach to location is directly significant to artists allowing them to develop other forms of dealing with their artwork.

Prácticas cartográficas cotidianas en la cultura digital [Razón y Palabra]

La revista Razón y Palabra acaba de publicar un número especial dedicado a Cultura digital y vida cotidiana en Iberoamérica: Una revisión crítica más allá de la Comunicación. Tíscar Lara y Edgar Gómez Cruz han logrado culminar un largo proceso como coordinadores de este número que finalmente ha visto la luz en esta revista digital iberoamericana especializada en comunicología y editada desde México. Resumen

El conjunto de "prácticas cartográficas" participativas que están emergiendo en el seno de la cultura digital, bajo etiquetas tales como neogeografía o cibercartografía, parecen proporcionar a la ciudadanía las condiciones adecuadas para el desarrollo de nuevas formas de relación con los espacios urbanos en habitan. En este texto exploraremos el modo en que la visualización de información territorial puede proporcionar las plataformas que contribuyan a la activación de procesos de participación ciudadana y a la (re)apropiación cultural del espacio público urbano, así como a la construcción de los imaginarios urbanos.

Abstract

The number of participative “cartographic practices” emerging on Digital Culture, under names like “newgeography” or “cybercartography” seems to proportionate the right conditions to citizens for the development of new relation forms with the urban spaces they inhabit. In this text, we explore the way on which the visualization of territorial information can proportionate the platforms that could contribute to the activation of citizenship participation and the cultural (re)appropriation of the public urban space, as well as the construction of urban imaginaries.

Prácticas cartográficas hegemónicas vs. prácticas cartográficas alternativas

Al realizar un breve recorrido por los principales hitos de la historia del pensamiento esquemático en la comunicación gráfica, Joan Costa (2007: 125) comenta el caso del plano de Bedonia (Italia), un mapa grabado sobre una superficie de piedra de 2,5 por 3,5 metros que data de la edad del bronce y en el que por medio de una serie de puntos y líneas se representan casas, cultivos y delimitaciones arquitectónicas del asentamiento.

En el tiempo transcurrido desde la creación de este ejemplo prehistórico hasta el surgimiento de las sofisticadas visualizaciones de información espacial que nos rodean en la actualidad la representación visual del territorio –en sus múltiples expresiones y finalidades– ha funcionado como uno de los mecanismos fundamentales para el ejercicio del poder y el control social por parte de instituciones y grupos dominantes, al tiempo que, sin embargo, ha desempeñado también una función crucial en los procesos de apropiación del espacio por parte de la ciudadanía.

La representación visual del territorio es una de las prácticas más importantes para la configuración de las relaciones que el ser humano mantiene con los espacios que “habita” – en el sentido más amplio del concepto–, de tal forma que su análisis es imprescindible para el estudio de la vida cotidiana.

A lo largo de la historia de la cartografía, el mapa ha sido comprendido principalmente como un instrumento al servicio de dirigentes políticos, usado para la administración de estados y ciudades así como para la planificación de acciones militares, ya sea a nivel local o en macro-proyectos de dominación tales como el colonial (Pickles 2004, en Perkins 2007). En este sentido, la cartografía se entiende como una actividad ejercida por profesionales que tienen los conocimientos y el acceso a los recursos y técnicas necesarios para ello, de modo que el mapa funciona como un instrumento producido de acuerdo a un programa determinado por los propósitos de esta clase política.

Un ejemplo de este ejercicio de poder a partir del mapeo en el ámbito urbano lo encontramos en la “domesticación” que en el marco de la modernidad se aplica a los viejos núcleos urbanos europeos. La intrincada estructura propia de la ciudad medieval actúa como un mecanismo de defensa que privilegia el conocimiento local propio de la comunidad conformada por los habitantes sobre el de los agentes externos, de tal modo que tal estructura, “as a semipermeable membrane, it facilitated communication within the city while reamining stubbornly unfamiliar to those who had not grown up speaking this special geographic dialect” (Scott 1998: 54). Para Scott, las operaciones de mapeo o reconocimiento militar de ciudades instigadas por las autoridades tras la Revolución Francesa constituyen un claro ejemplo de estrategia diseñada para localizar y obtener un acceso más rápido a aquellos puntos de la ciudad que permiten desactivar de la forma más eficiente las potenciales revueltas.

Pero más allá de ser un instrumento para el control del territorio urbano ya existente, el mapa actúa en este contexto como un instrumento de reconfiguración y adaptación de estos espacios, así como para la creación de otros nuevos. A partir de lógicas cartesianas en las que las avenidas se cruzan las unas con las otras para formar retículas geométricas se aspira a facilitar las tareas de administración, el suministro de servicios y, por supuesto, el control de una ciudad que, frente a la medieval, es ahora fácilmente “legible” desde fuera. No obstante, a pesar de la eficiencia para la gestión de la ciudad perseguida en muchos casos a través de estas medidas, no conviene olvidar que, como bien apunta Scott, “the fact that such order works for municipal and state authorities in administering the city is no guarantee that it works for citizens” (Scott 1998: 58).

Al margen de lo que podríamos considerar como unas prácticas cartográficas hegemónicas, minoritarias, elitistas, al servicio del poder y/o de la ciencia, en las que el mapa funciona como un instrumento creado por profesionales de acuerdo con protocolos altamente definidos y con un relativamente restringido programa de usos y finalidades; también han existido otras cartografías alternativas: heterogéneas, radicales, tácticas, ciudadanas, participativas, colaborativas, ambiguas, abiertamente subjetivas, cotidianas.

Como es obvio, a pesar de que determinados proyectos cartográficos requieran unos medios, técnicas y datos accesibles únicamente para unos pocos, el simple acto de representar el territorio sobre una superficie con el objeto de facilitar la orientación en el espacio –saber dónde estamos– y de registrar y/o comunicar un itinerario concreto supone una práctica cartográfica que cualquier persona está en disposición de llevar a cabo, probablemente del mismo modo en que lo está para aprender un sistema de comunicación verbal.

En gran medida, las prácticas cartográficas alternativas, de un modo u otro han aspirado a subvertir las lógicas establecidas desde el poder y a promover el cambio social, frecuentemente a través de un perseguido empoderamiento de la ciudadanía. En esta línea se situarían conceptos tales como la “cartografía radical”, definida por Alexis Bhagat y Lize Mogel como “the practice of mapmaking that subverts conventional notions in order to actively promote social change” (Bhagat & Mogel 2008: 6) o las “cartografías tácticas”, entendidas como una extrapolación de los principios del tactical media al ámbito de la representación espacial: “the creation, distribution, and use of spatial data to intervene in systems of control affecting spatial meaning and practice. (...) they (tactical cartographies) are political machines that work on power relations (Institute for Applied Autonomy 2008: 30).

Impulsados por colectivos e individuos que pueden enmarcarse, según el caso con mayor o menor facilidad, en ámbitos como el de las prácticas artísticas, los movimientos sociales, el activismo ciudadano, la academia, pero también (o además) en forma de iniciativas empresariales de todo tipo y en contextos puramente domésticos, en los últimos años hemos visto emerger numerosas prácticas que a partir del uso del mapa están produciendo nuevas percepciones de la ciudad y, de algún modo, le devuelven al mapa una capacidad para construir narrativas que durante los últimos siglos había ido deteriorándose.

Prácticas cartográficas y cultura digital

En el contexto de la cultura digital, los procesos de representación territorial y las diversas actividades desarrolladas en torno a éstos están cambiando de tal forma que adjetivos como “participativo”, “colaborativo”, “comunitario” o “ciudadano” –aplicados desde hace años a actividades como el periodismo o las ciencias– han comenzado también a emplearse para identificar prácticas emergentes en el ámbito de la cartografía que rompen de diversas formas con las lógicas previas.

Desde hace décadas los sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) han permitido gestionar información territorial a través de tecnologías digitales, lo cual ha contribuido a que las prácticas cartográficas hegemónicas que mencionábamos antes se hayan transformado considerablemente al incrementar las capacidades que ofrecen para gestionar la información.

Sin embargo, la inflexión más sustancial parece haberse producido precisamente en lo que respecta al desarrollo de las que hemos llamado prácticas cartográficas alternativas, a través de la adopción por parte de éstas de recursos y herramientas que en la era pre-digital eran accesibles únicamente en contextos profesionales, científicos y por tanto altamente acotados. Es precisamente a partir de las prácticas en torno al mapa que emergen en la vida cotidiana desde donde surgen conceptos tales como el de neogeografía, que no hacen si no repensar al mismo tiempo las actividades cartográficas profesionales y sugerir una cierta crisis de las mismas.

The ability for users to comment on a map, to delete meaningless places, add meaningful places, and to share those comments and places with others, may provide means of putting practices of spatialization and temporalization in the hands of users – allowing them to manipulate, or shape, their city – instead of limiting the potential of everyday life and
controlling the flow through abstracted technological objects and models of information. (Anne Galloway 2008: 403)

Si bien son diversas las tecnologías y los usos que parecen estar otorgando al mapa un lugar central en el seno de la cultura digital (locative media, ubiquitous computing, geoetiquetado, etc.), Hudson-Smith y Crooks identifican una aplicación concreta y una fecha exacta con lo que ellos consideran un momento en el que “the rise of volunteered geographic information, crowd sourcing, Neogeography and citizen science, amongst many other newly emerging terms linked to the geographic profession” (Hudson-Smith & Crooks 2008: 2). La aplicación es Google Maps y la fecha el 23 de abril de 2005, el día en que el número de consultas en el buscador Google de esta herramienta superó al número de consultas del término GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

Más allá del carácter anecdótico de la fecha, que los propios autores reconocen, los lanzamientos de Google Maps y Google Earth han supuesto un punto de inflexión en la capadidad de acceso y manipulación de información geográfica por parte de los usuarios y simbolizan la “liberación” de una serie de prácticas y actividades que, por diversos motivos, habían permanecido históricamente accesibles tan sólo a colectivos reducidos y altamente endogámicos, y que mayoritariamente habían sido ejercidas desde el ámbito profesional. Esta superación del número de personas interesadas en Google Maps en relación con el número de personas interesadas en los sistemas de información geográfica redefine el estatus de la cartografía en cuanto a práctica de la vida cotidiana.

Es en este escenario donde se empieza a hablar de una transformación a gran escala de las prácticas cartográficas y de la geografía en general –dada la relevancia del mapa para esta disciplina científica–, para unos amenazada por la “rebelión de los legos” y según otros enriquecida por una “liberación” de la información geográfica, que es adaptada ahora a nuevos contextos que se alejan de metodologías científicas y protocolos profesionales y que se guían por objetivos muy diferentes a los de las minorías que habían tenido el acceso en exclusiva a los recursos e información, abriendo así el espectro de usos que se dan al mapa en la vida diaria.

No obstante, a pesar de que Google Maps ha supuesto un elemento fundamental para la transformación de las prácticas cartográficas digitales, Walsh apunta que únicamente lo ha hecho haciendo accesible para muchos lo que antes lo era sólo para unos pocos:

What was “Web 2.0” about Google Maps mashups? Google provided a web-based component for others to build applications on. It allowed developers to decorate their websites with pictures of the world without having to license data or dig deep into cartographic tools. It altered the data licensing models of suppliers. Yet it changed none of the processes used to bring people and data sources together. It offered what had been available previously only to a few, to many; but the only people able to Harness Collective Intelligence and create value from it, were Google themselves. (Walsh 2008: 29)

Según este análisis, frente a las aplicaciones de Google y a los mashups generados por los usuarios a partir de su API de libre acceso, el proyecto que realmente encarnaría un modelo paradigmático de incorporación de los principios y lógicas de la Web 2.0 y el código abierto al ámbito cartográfio sería Open Street Map, en la medida en que en este proyecto los usuarios no se limitan a localizar elementos sobre una representación del territorio – generando una capa de información superpuesta a la información proporcionada por Google– si no que son los propios usuarios los que construyen el mapa, generan por tanto el contenido en sus totalidad y dejan así de estar supeditados a los intereses de una macrocorporación que puede reflejarse por ejemplo en el borrado selectivo de construcciones en determinadas zonas.

En The Practice of Everyday Life De Certeau (1988) explicaba cómo a lo largo de los últimos quinientos años, concretamente desde los momentos en que el pensamiento científico moderno comienza a gestarse, el mapa había ido progresivamente repudiando, expulsando de sí, los itinerarios que, paradójicamente, habrían hecho posible su existencia. El mapa había estado hasta entonces orientado a visualizar operaciones espaciales, recogiendo así itinerarios e incluso yuxtaponiendo al trazo que marcaba los pasos que el viajero debía seguir con una serie de ilustraciones de los eventos clave en el transcurso del viaje. De este modo, el mapa funcionaría a modo de narración. Sin embargo, progresivamente el mapa va expulsando de sí la acción, aquellos elementos que han sido una parte indispensable en su construcción: “it colonizes space; it eliminates Iittle by little the pictural figurations of the practices that produce it”, de tal modo que oculta “the operations of which it is the result or the necessary condition. It remains alone on the stage. The tour describers have disappeared” (De Certeau 1988: 121). Tal vez ahora, en el contexto digital, el mapa comienza a incorporar nuevamente de manera explícita aquellos procesos que lo hacen posible.

Hacia un giro epistemológico de la geografía: el mapa como acción

Brian Harley (1989, en Dodge & Kitchin 2007) recurre a Foucault, Derrida y la teoría crítica para plantear que el mapa es ante todo una construcción social y cuestionar así la visión positivista de éste como un producto de la ciencia capaz de mostrar de manera neutral y objetiva la realidad al permanecer exento de cargas ideológicas. Crampton (2003, en Dodge & Kitchin 2007) expone la necesidad de cuestionar las propias bases ontológicas de la cartografía y entender el mapa como un producto contingente, sujeto a las condiciones históricas de los momentos y lugares en que es producido y leído, incapaz por tanto de reflejar “la verdad”. John Pickles (2004, en Dodge & Kitchin 2007) apunta la necesidad de una cartografía “post-representacional”, que no vea al mapa como un espejo de la realidad sino como un productor de realidad, y “des-ontologizada”, que reconozca que las prácticas cartográficas alternativas tienen un estatus ontológico igual que las desarrolladas desde ámbitos científicos. En definitiva, propone entender al mapa no como algo externo al mundo que representa, sino como algo que está dentro de él y que por tanto tiene efectos en él.

Dodge y Kitchin acaban con una propuesta que va un paso más allá de estas críticas a las bases ontológicas de la cartografía clásica al sugerir que los mapas “have no ontological security; they are ontogenetic in nature” (Dodge & Kitchin 2007: 335).

A pesar de que estas aportaciones teóricas son consideradas por estos autores como pasos fundamentales en la gestación de un giro epistemológico de la geografía y la cartografía, tales planteamientos permanecerían aún basados en una perspectiva que percibe al mapa como un producto estable. Es decir, a pesar de cuestionar el carácter ontológico clásico de la cartografía –que el mundo puede ser representado fielmente haciendo uso de procedimientos científicos–, no lo hacen sino proponiendo como sustitutas otras ontologías alternativas. Dodge y Kitchin pretenden ir más allá al proponer que el mapa carece de una “seguridad ontológica”, sean cuales sean las bases de ésta, de modo que según estos autores el mapa es siempre un resultado del momento, del contexto, que no existe si no es en la práctica y, por tanto, lejos de ser “producto” es siempre “proceso”. El mapa “sucede” sólo en el momento en que alguien interpreta una forma visual dada como la representación de un territorio y, por tanto, son siempre “práctica”. Cualquier representación espacial no es más que:

... a set of points, lines and colours that takes form as, and is understood as, a map through mapping practices (an inscription in a constant state of reinscription). Without these practices a spatial representation is simply coloured ink on a page. (This is not a facetious statement – without the knowledge of what constitutes a map is or how a map works how can it be otherwise?) Practices based on learned knowledge and skills (re)make the ink into a map and this occurs every time they are engaged with – the set of points, lines and areas is recognized as a map; it is interpreted, translated and made to do work in the work. As such, maps are constantly in a state of becoming; constantly being remade. (Dodge & Kitchin 2007: 335)

W.J.T. Mitchell sintetiza el funcionamiento de cualquier mecanismo de representación apuntando que una representación es “always of something or someone, by something or someone, to someone” (Mitchell 1990: 12). El pensamiento cartográfico clásico asumiría sin problemas las dos primeras afirmaciones de esta triada. Por un lado el mapa se concibe tradicionalmente como una representación de algo (of something), que en su caso sería una porción de espacio, el territorio en sí, y que puede estar además complementado por la superposición de datos generados a partir de un amplio espectro de fenómenos que de algún modo se caracterizan por una dimensión espacial que permiten asociarlos con unas coordinadas de latitud y longitud, es decir, “suceden” en tales coordenadas. Por otro lado, el mapa es siempre representación por medio de algo [1], unos materiales concretos –piedra, cuero, papel, madera, pantallas, la luz de un holograma, etc– como por medio de unos códigos que tienen que ver con el modo en que el terreno es proyectado en la superfice, la escala aplicada, las formas gráficas y colores empleados para visualizar la información o el grado de iconicidad o semejanza de las formas gráficas usadas en la representación con respecto a su referente – desde mapas topográficos altamente detallados hasta otros topológicos más esquematizados.

Las corrientes críticas señaladas por Dodge y Kitchin parecerían limitarse a cuestionar las relaciones entre el territorio (of) y aquello que lo representa (by), al destacar el carácter retórico implícito en cualquier representación. Es decir, tales planteamientos rechazarían la idea de que la representación puede reflejar o mostrar lo real para sostener que, por el contrario, toda representación proporciona siempre argumentos, construye un discurso y en vez de "reproducir" la realidad lo que hace es "producirla".

Por su parte, la propuesta de repensar el mapa lanzada por Dodge y Kitchin desplazaría el foco de atención de la cartografía hacia el tercero de los aspectos presentes según Mitchell en todo proceso de representación: que la representación es siempre “to someone”. En otras palabras, el mapa debería entenderse ante todo como un proceso que se da en un contexto determinado, siempre sujeto a la interpretación de alguien que en un momento y lugar concretos entiende como una forma dada como una representación espacial: “maps are of-the-moment, beckoned into being through practices; they are always mapping” (Kitchin and Dodge 334). Y tal interpretación no está ni siquiera restringida a procesos comunicativos en los que alguien entiende como mapa una forma gráfica producida por otra persona con el objetivo de representar una zona geográfica determinada, sino que es aplicable a la comprensión de cualquier forma visual como representación espacial por parte de alguien.

Esta dependencia de la acción como única vía para que “algo” pase de ser “mapa en potencia” a actualizarse como representación espacial implica que el mapa es siempre contigente y que está sujeto a un proceso que “sucede” en el marco de múltiples variables culturales así como a las espectativas personales y temporales de quien experimenta tal
interpretación.

En esta misma línea Perkins (2008) reivindica potenciar un estudio de las “cultures of map use”, tomando como premisa que no existe un único uso correcto del mapa y que es necesario explorar el amplio abanico de prácticas cartográficas que se dan en la vida cotidiana. Y precisamente en el contexto de la cultura digital, tecnologías y prácticas emergentes estarían contribuyendo a ampliar la frecuencia y tipologías de los usos y producción de representaciones espaciales en la vida cotidiana:

The medium becomes much more social and task-oriented, more ubiquitous, ephemeral and mobile. Users and producers are no longer separate. Pervasive technologies offer people possibilities of putting themselves on their own map, destabilising the taken-for-granted representational neutrality of the image; new kinds of maps are being made; more people are making maps; more things are being mapped; and mapping is taking place in more contexts than ever before. (Perkins 2008: 151)

Este hecho estaría a su vez contribuyendo a potenciar una ruptura con los presupuestos de la cartografía clásica y los enfoques puramente cognitivistas, promoviendo así un giro epistemológico en el modo en que el mapa es comprendido desde la ciencia, “where concern shifts towards observing the social practices of actors in real-world settings, and explores how practices lead to making sense of the world” (Perkins 2008: 152). Es la “vida social” del mapa lo que empezaría a cobrar relevancia en este marco.

Tal cambio de perspectiva en el modo en que el mapa es concebido desde la ciencia coincide además con el ya mencionado desarrollo de una serie de aplicaciones, servicios online y herramientas digitales que permiten a los usuarios acceder a información geográfica y manipular representaciones territoriales de modos que antes eran inaccesibles desde fuera de contextos profesionales, lo cual no sólo está afectando a las prácticas cartográficas alternativas y/o cotidianas sino a las profesionales: “professional tools are entering the realm of the masses via Web 2.0 technologies and from this the professions’ themselves are changing” (Hudson-Smith and Crook 2008: 3).

Internet local, geolocalización y vida cotidiana

A lo largo de los últimos años, Internet y el resto de tecnologías digitales asociadas han ido integrándose de manera gradual en la vida cotidiana, de tal forma que han sido múltiples las transformaciones experimentadas a escala local y en relación con los espacios en los que transcurre la cotidianeidad.

A pesar de que el boom de la geolocalización y la proliferación de dispositivos –cada vez más pequeños– capaces de procesar este tipo de información abren las puertas al desarrollo de prácticas insólitas en los modos de relación que la ciudadanía puede mantener con sus entornos locales, hasta el momento el alcance de estas tecnologías en la evolución de la “Internet local” puede considerarse marginal si lo comparamos con el de otras tecnologías “convencionales”. La normalización de las operaciones bancarias a través de Internet, la vigorización de las interconexiones del tejido empresarial a partir de un uso intensivo de Internet “como herramientas, como modelo de negocio y como cultura organizativa”, los blogs de barrio, la autorganización de acciones ciudadanas mediante aplicaciones web 2.0 o iniciativas como las locapedias son algunas de las tecnologías y prácticas emergentes que “están en gran medida orientadas específicamente a entornos locales generando realidades híbridas, fruto de la integración de procesos y elementos analógicos y digitales” (Freire 2009).

En este sentido, la creciente adopción de tecnologías de geolocalización en la cotidianeidad no debe ser entendida como un desencadenante de prácticas digitales de carácter local, sino como algo que se inserta en un contexto de usos previo y que está conectado con toda una serie de prácticas existentes a las que de algún modo vendría a complementar.

La ciudad contemporánea está cada vez más caracterizada por un aumento de espacios mixtos o híbridos en los que elementos materiales y flujos de información (en su mayoría invisibles) convergen. Más que nunca, el mapa se convierte así en un instrumento orientado a la visualización de fenómenos invisibles o que simplemente son de naturaleza no visual. Si estamos de acuerdo en que “one of the most striking features of the new visual culture is the growing tendency to visualize things that are not in themselves visual” (Mirzoeff 1999: 5), el mapa pasa a ocupar una posición central en la cultura visual contemporánea junto a otras estrategias de visualización abstracta que son adoptadas desde diversos ámbitos sociales.

Las operaciones espaciales desarrolladas en torno al mapa en la cultura digital abren las prácticas cartográficas hacia nuevos horizontes en los que, más allá de representar relaciones espaciales, “they reveal conditions in the city that were previously hidden in spreadsheets and databases” (Varnelis and Meisterlin 2008) e incluso comienzan a visualizar información que nunca había sido recogida en tales bases de datos, al estar fuera de los intereses de aquellos con la capacidad para generarlas.
